In an interview with our reporter, a registered dietitian nutritionist and public health professional with over five years of experience in clinical and community nutrition, Mrs. Peace Ezekwem offers valuable insights on how consumers, especially families, can make nutritious choices amid increasing food prices. Some of the points raised include:

1. Opt for locally-available staples

She emphasised consuming locally-available staples, such as garri and local rice, among others, which are often more affordable and contribute to a diverse diet in the home.

2. Bulk-buying

Families are advised to consider purchasing food items in bulk to save on costs and ensure a more sustainable approach to shopping.

3. Seasonal fruit choices

Choice of fruits that are in season, such as udara (African star apple), African pear, garden egg, and cucumber. This not only supports local farmers, but also provides fresh and cost-effective options for families.

4. Strategic shopping habits

Time your visits to the market early to secure fresh agricultural produce at lower prices. especially for vegetables.

Recommendations for farmers

1. Enhance crop nutritional value

Use organic manure and fertilizers from animal dungs, along with incorporating herbal trees, to maintain high nutritional value in crops.

2.  Adopt farming practices

Implement crop rotation to preserve the nutritional content of crops and ensure the use of good seeds and diverse varieties.

Budget-friendly approaches for consumers. Mrs. Ezekwem advised families to:

1. Patronise local and farmers markets

For those on a budget, supporting local and farmers’ markets can offer affordable and fresh produce without unnecessary additives.

2. Minimise food wastage

Buy quantities that can be consumed within a specific timeframe to reduce food waste. Proper storage methods for perishables should be explored, with creative repurposing for extended use.

2. Diversify diet with nutrient-dense foods

Plan meals ahead to include a variety of nutrient-dense foods to meet nutritional requirements effectively. By making informed and healthy food choices, individuals can not only combat the impact of rising food prices, but also contribute to a healthier lifestyle. Mrs. Ezekwem emphasises that adopting such practices would ultimately reduce the number of people requiring hospitalisation or people seeking medical attention.
