Nigeria joined other countries, heads of state, ministers, youth, indigenous leaders and climate activists to discuss and agree upon ways to accelerate action to tackle growing hunger and an unprecedented food crisis at the annual 46th Governing Council of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), held in Rome, Italy. The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr. Mahmood Abubakar represented Nigeria at the event. During the occasion, IFAD launched its 13th replenishment, mobilised funds for the poorest and most disenfranchised people around the world while IFAD member states also decided on Ukraine’s application to join IFAD, as a new member.
Dr. Abubakar further shared latest news and recommendations on the country’s food security situation and opportunities to invest in resilience building, climate adaptation and rural development to tackle growing hunger and the unfolding multidimensional food security crisis. IFAD is an international financial institution and a United Nations specialised agency. Based in Rome, IFAD invests in rural people, empowering them to reduce poverty, increase food security, improve nutrition and strengthen resilience. Since 1978, IFAD had provided more than US$24 billion in grants and low-interest loans to fund projects in developing countries.
