Backyard farming: A practical response to Nigeria’s food challenges

Nigeria’s rising food prices have made feeding the average household increasingly difficult. The cost of tomatoes, peppers, vegetables and other basic food items continues to put pressure on family incomes. While large-scale agriculture remains essential to feeding the nation, Nigerians must also look beyond commercial farms for practical ways to increase local food production.

Backyard farming means growing food in available spaces around the home. It can involve vegetables planted in small plots, sacks, containers, or grow bags, as well as small-scale poultry or fish farming where space permits. It is not a substitute for commercial agriculture, but it can help households produce part of what they consume and reduce their dependence on the market. This approach is particularly relevant in urban areas, where unused spaces are often available, but underutilised. A small garden can produce vegetables such as fluted pumpkin leaf, spinach, pepper and tomatoes.

Even modest production can help reduce household spending, improve access to fresh food and, where there is a surplus, it provides an opportunity to earn additional income. Backyard farming can also contribute to healthier diets. Many Nigerian households rely heavily on staples such as rice, yam and cassava. When fresh vegetables are grown at homes, they become easier and cheaper to include in everyday meals. There is also an economic opportunity, particularly for young people. However, backyard farming will not grow significantly without support. The government should make affordable seeds, seedlings, and basic farming inputs available to households.

Agricultural extension officers should provide practical guidance on suitable crops, soil preparation, pest control and the efficient use of small spaces. Local governments can establish demonstration gardens in schools, health centres, and public spaces to show communities what can be achieved. They can also support community gardens where individual households have little or no available land. The private sector should complement these efforts by producing affordable farming kits, containers, irrigation equipment and improved seeds suitable for urban households. Financial institutions can also provide small, accessible loans for viable household and community farming projects.

A 2026 study, titled “Effect of backyard gardening on food decurity status of urban household in Ibadan metropolis, Oyo State, Nigeria”, revealed that backyard gardening can provide an opportunity for urban households to supplement their food supply, reduce household food expenses, and improve nutrition. The study further showed that backyard gardening can significantly improve urban household food security and serve as an effective strategy for enhancing food availability and accessibility in urban areas, calling on every urban household to engage in the practice to improve their food availability and accessibility, while the government, at all levels, should integrate backyard gardening into urban agriculture and food security programme through awareness campaigns and the imperative of encouraging urban households to adopt gardening practices.

Citizens, on their part, must recognise that food production is not exclusively the responsibility of farmers or government. An unused corner of a compound, a suitable balcony or a small backyard can become productive space. Backyard farming may not solve all of Nigeria’s food problems, but if thousands or even millions of households produce a portion of their own vegetables and other food items, the combined impact can be significant. Nigeria needs large farms, modern agricultural infrastructure and sound food policies. It also needs families willing to grow what they can. We believe that the fight against rising food costs must begin not only on the farm, but also at home, for where there is space to plant, there is always an opportunity to produce.
