In Nigeria, the battle against food insecurity is being waged on multiple fronts, with various institutes playing pivotal roles in guiding the nation towards agricultural sustainability. Among these bodies are the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (FMAFS), the National Agricultural Extension and Research Liaison Services (NAERLS), and the Nigerian Institute of Social and Economic Research (NISER), to name a few.

These organisations collectively work towards building a sustainable agrifood system, influencing policy change, and providing extension services to farmers. IFPRI is a beacon in evidence-building and policy advocacy, employing a Food Security Simulator tailored to Nigeria. On the other hand, FMAFS is responsible for developing and implementing policies to boost agricultural productivity, enhance food security, and promote rural development. NAERLS is a research institute that provides extension services to improve farm productivity and rural development. NISER contributes to the cause by researching social and economic issues providing valuable insights and policy recommendations for addressing food security.

The Institute of Food Security, Environmental Resources and Agricultural Research (IFSERAR) at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, stands out in pursuing food security. Established in 2009, IFSERAR is committed to researching food security, environmental and natural resources, and agricultural production. Farmers benefit significantly from IFSERAR’s research, which encompasses the development of improved agricultural implements, building capacity, and fostering collaborations with national agricultural centres and research networks. Understanding and leveraging resources, these institutes provide interventions for farmers that enhance their agricultural activities.

Familiarising themselves with the policy initiatives advocated by IFPRI and FMAFS can empower farmers to navigate the farm landscape more effectively. Seeking extension services from NAERLS can provide valuable insights into improving productivity and adopting sustainable practices. Additionally, staying informed about the research conducted by IFSERAR and other institutes can guide farmers in implementing innovative approaches, ultimately contributing to the sustainable attainment of food security in Nigeria. As these institutes continue their efforts, farmers play a vital role in realising a more resilient and secure food system for the nation.
