Our team at FarmingFarmersFarms recently explored the fascinating world of Mustafa, an elderly farmer engaging in diverse agricultural practices to meet the needs of his family. What caught our attention was his unwavering commitment to poultry production, a venture that often tests the mettle of even the most seasoned farmers in Nigeria. Amidst the challenges that plague the agricultural landscape in Nigeria, Jimoh stands out as a beacon of dedication to his craft.
FarmingFarmersFarms’ investigation revealed that his interest in poultry production is deeply-rooted in the knowledge acquired through agricultural extension services and the experiences of his children pursuing agricultural technology in higher institutions. This amalgamation of theoretical and practical insights spurred him to transform his backyard into a thriving poultry farm. Venturing into the heart of his farm, we discovered the strategic positioning of his poultry operation by placing emphasis on managing broilers and selling them at the culmination of week four underscored a meticulous approach aimed at optimising both production and profits.
During conversation with him, he expressed contentment in this practice, claiming it to be the key to navigating the hardships of poultry production in Nigeria. Findings also showed that our investigation also brought to light to Mudashiru’s unique brooding techniques. Utilising pots and electric bulbs, he ensured a constant light source throughout the night. His explanation of the necessity of light for the birds to feed during the night, coupled with the use of solar power, showcased a blend of traditional and modern methods in his farming approach. According to him, failure to provide light could lead to clustering by posing a threat to the well-being of the birds.

However, one of the significant challenges faced by the farmer in his poultry venture is the soaring cost of feed. Acknowledging this obstacle, he revealed his strategy of raising birds for just four weeks, deeming it a practical response to the economic constraints. He shared insights into the fluctuating prices of feed, emphasising that the cost for his last set of broilers was comparatively smaller than the current set. Beyond the financial aspects, the farmer imparted valuable advice during our conversation. He spoke passionately about the potential of poultry farming to generate income when approached with dedication and contentment. Additionally, he advocated for the establishment of more agricultural schools and colleges in the Okeogun region, citing the high level of agricultural practices and the growing interest among locals.
