In an effort to explore and promote sustainable agriculture as well as a safe environment, FarmingFarmersFarms recently launched a dynamic podcast for farmers and readers, titled ‘Dissecting Integrated Farming’. The event, which featured, an agricultural expert, Mr. Waheed Adetunji, delved into the historical roots of integrated farming, its modern applications, and challenges faced during the enlightening discussion.
The podcast, which is a platform to bridge the gap between traditional agricultural practices and modern applications, had a total of 57 participants in the maiden edition that actively engaged in the conversation, highlighting the growing interest in sustainable agricultural practices. Adetunji emphasised that integrated farming is not a novel concept, but has deep roots in traditional practices, all in a bid to reduce waste and increase food. He painted a vivid picture of how communities traditionally combined various agricultural activities to achieve a harmonious and sustainable ecosystem.
The discussant cited a notable example from Nigeria, where farmers integrate crop cultivation with livestock rearing. In this traditional approach, the synergy between crops and animals is key to maximising resources. Crop residues fed livestock and, in turn, animal manure enrich the soil, creating a closed-loop system that ensures fertility and productivity. The resource person outlined the merits of integrated farming, including enhanced resource utilisation, diversified income streams, and improved environmental sustainability. He stressed that this approach aligns with modern principles, promoting biodiversity and reducing reliance on external inputs; although the process usually involves hard work and technicalities.
Adetunji gave examples of integrated farming to include chicken and fish farming, and fish and pig farming, among others. As global concerns about sustainable agriculture continue to rise, the insights shared during the podcast have contributed to the ongoing dialogue on shaping the future of farming. The host, Mr. Righteous Olowu, revealed that the podcast is set to grace listeners’ ears on a monthly basis, marking the beginning of each month with insightful episodes.
