An Asian woman has demonstrated how lipsticks can be made from palm kernel fruits in a video, which has gone viral on social media. The video shows the woman going from pounding out the fruit (kernels), off the bunch, then cooking for a while with some water before pouring in another area for pounding after which she boiled under high heat before extracting the pulp after filtering. She goes on to mix the produce with some essential oil and some other products, then filtered again adding some other ingredients. Palm oil, as a versatile vegetable oil, is commonly used in cosmetics and personal care products, as well as packaged foods, cleaning products, and even biofuel, according to research. Ethyl palmitate, glyceryl stearate, hydrogenated palm glycerides, palmitate (and any variation of palmitate), sodium lauryl/laureth sulfate, and stearic acid, are other names for palm oil that can be found on ingredient lists for cosmetic products.

According to a cosmetic blog, palm oil is used in lipstick as it holds colour well, doesn’t melt at high temperatures, and has a smooth application and it virtually has no taste. Croda International, a British specialty chemicals company, based in the United Kingdom and one of the largest manufacturers and suppliers of ingredients to the beauty and personal care industry, confirmed that palm derivatives are used in 70 per cent of the world’s personal care products.
