Hydroponics is the growing of plants, usually crops, vegetables or medicinal plants without soil by using water-based mineral nutrient solutions in aqueous solvents.
The project, according to uppermichiganssource.com, was started by a parent volunteer and Garden Club Coordinator, Martha Rypstra, who applied for a grant through a hydroponic company in the South West, known as Green our Planet.
According to Rypstra, the school will also add an outdoor greenhouse soon, which will cost $57,000. She added that the school board had already raised about $20,000 while the rest will be sourced through grant applications and fundraising efforts.
She added that parents should be actively involved in their children’s education, hence the move to encourage elementary graders in hydroponic gardening.
The school, which received the equipment, has since installed the equipment, to encourage gardening among the young stars.
Rypstra believes that ultimately the pupils will be able to grow food for lunch and snack time in the school.
