He explained that, by planting majorly legumes on a farm, they contribute organic matter to the soil and thus keep the soil healthy.
He further advised farmers to cover their soils to reduce erosion and prevent them from getting direct sunlight in order to retain moisture in the soil. “Farmers must ensure a nurturing environment for plants and crops to thrive. Using zero tillage for instance, where they disturb the soil less, by making the soil a conducive environment for microorganisms to thrive”, the guest stated. He reiterated how that by ensuring soil conservation through planting of legumes; erosion can be reduced and water better conserved in the soil. Adetunji concluded by emphasising the role of cover crops in contributing organic matter to maintain soil health, urging farmers to create nurturing environments for crops through sustainable practices.
