In a bid to curtail the felling of trees for fire woods in Nigeria, the Federal Government in partnership with the Atmosfair, a German company, has disclosed its plans to distribute one million ‘Save80 Clean Cookstoves’ annually. The Director-General of National Council on Climate Change, Dr. Salisu Dahiru, made the disclosure while briefing newsmen on the sidelines of a sensitisation programme for North Central Women, held in the Keffi Local Government Area of Nasarawa State. Dr. Dahiru stated that the cookstove’s creation and design would enable people conserve at least, 80% of the firewood used to prepare a typical family meal.
Dahiru further assured that the Federal Government would provide an enabling environment for Atmosfair to ensure that the cookstoves were made available and affordable at all times to the people. He informed that governments at the federal and the state levels have made it possible for the company to invest in Nigeria, to set up a factory in Kano and set up an assembling plan in Agada village, Keffi where, according to him, they would bring the completely knocked-down pieces and assemble it. According to the Chief Executive Officer of Atmosfair, Dr. Dietrich Brockhagen the cookstove, would not only save about 80 per cent of cost, but it also has a 10 year-guarantee.
