A young Ghanaian graduate, Michael Donkor in Accra, the capital city of Ghana, has revealed that pepper farming is extremely profitable. Speaking on the profitability of pepper farming during an interview session with Charles Antwi, Michael, who read Political Science and Philosophy, said he developed an interest for farming at a young age when he used to follow his mother to her rice farm, while his father was away on mission field. Upon graduation in 2017, he started growing gingers after which he ventured into planting pepper seeds.
He noted further that habaneros are not seasonal and are needed everyday, hence why the cultivation is significant as farmers see value for it every year. “When the prices stand at 30 cedi a kilo, on an acre, you should get like 10 tonnes a week. If you get a tonne on an acre a week, which is 30 cedi a kilo that is 30k a week and it can span you 10 to 12 week at peak”, he further revealed. Michael further advocated that agriculture should be incorporated into the national service year of graduates, to motivate them into doing agriculture more.
